How to Safely Shave Your Pubic Area

by | Health & Wellness

Feb 4, 2023

A good shave on your pubic area makes you feel refreshed. A bad one? Makes you feel very uncomfortable, as bad shaves often make a person feel the need to itch and itch and can even raise the risk of developing hair bumps.

Still don’t understand how shaving works? You are not alone. There are many of us out here, and I am here to help. This is how to safely shave your pubic area.

1. Choose a Good Blade

You probably know this: a bad blade will make your shave terrible. You will most likely itch and itch all over and may even give yourself some micro-cuts.

Have you ever shaved and then gone right into the bathroom only to feel some stinging down there the moment soap touched your skin?

Trust me, that was most likely your blade. It was either too sharp, too blunt or not angled properly, so you kept on cutting yourself.

If you are going to have a safe and refreshing shave, then you should choose a blade that is just right for you.

A dermatologist can help you choose. He will take into consideration the texture of your skin and the brittleness of your hair.

2. Make Sure Your Blade is Clean

I do not advise anyone to use the same blade twice. But if you must do so, make sure the blade is very clean. A blade that isn’t is going to increase the risk of having an infection.

Look at the blade very closely before using it. Be sure to discard this blade if you find any rust.

If it looks clean enough, you should wash it with hot water; or even better, you can soak the blade in water for a while, say 30 minutes, before using it.

3. Trim

You will definitely have to trim if you have not shaved in a while. That is if the hair around your pubic area is much.

To trim, you will need a comb and a pair of scissors. Make sure these have been washed and disinfected.

Please note that you can skip this if you have had a shave recently and your hair is not that long down there.

Now, put the teeth of your comb in the hair and pull a bit so that the apex of the hair is just above the comb.

Using your pair of scissors, trim the hair over and over until it is not so much anymore, and a shaving stick or blade or even an electric shaver can do the work from there.

4. Wash the Area

After you have trimmed, there is a big chance that there will be hair all over the place. This can irritate you, as you will feel like small needles are pricking you painlessly.

Washing the area takes away all this little hair.

It also makes your hair feel softer so that a blade glides through.

You probably did not know this, but it is easier to shave off wet hair. (Read: 11 Best Oils to Use as Lube & Alternatives to Avoid)

5. Get Some Shaving Gel On

If you have not been shaving your pubic area with shaving gel, it is time to start. A shaving gel does not only soften your hair and, eventually, skin: it makes it easier for the blade to glide past and increases the likelihood that you will get a clear and clean cut.

Gel also reduces the friction between your skin and the blade so that even if the blade touches your skin a bit, there would not be an injury.

Gather some gel on your fingers, and apply it properly.

Note: it is important to note that not everyone likes a wet shave. Some men are fine with a dry shave. If this works for you, then I suggest you should go ahead and get a dry shave, even though dry shaves may take longer. You just need to get the shaving techniques right, so you do not injure yourself.

For a dry shave, get down there all dried up again. As soon as you get back from the bathroom after the trim, rub down there with a dry towel and wait a while for the water to evaporate.

6. Shaving The Pubic Area

Now, it is time to get into the shaving proper. You may or may not need a mirror, but I advise that you get one.

Stand with your legs spread apart.

Do not shave against the grain!

That is, do not move the blade at an angle that is against your hair. Shaving against the grain increases the chances that you will injure yourself or even get in gown hair.

When you shave against the grain, not all the hair is removed.

Some stick around, just underneath the skin, and can cause problems.

Do not attempt to shave everywhere at the same time. Instead, shave in small bits. Map out an area you want to shave and run the blade down there. Little by little until you have got the perfect shave.

7. Shaving The Balls

This is where a lot of guys have some problems. It isn’t so difficult to shave the pubic area. But the groin and the balls are so difficult to shave.

Apply some powder on your balls so that the blade just cuts through.

Now, gently and very carefully shave. Shave a small area and then move around until your ball sack is properly shaved.

8. Wash

It is important to use a mild soap to wash after shaving so that you don’t further irritate any skin that must have been broken.

Do not use a sponge this time. With your hands, wash around your groin gently in small circular movements.

Wash until all the hair is completely gone. And then dry off.

Pat the towel on your groin repeatedly. Do not slide. Just pat.

9. Apply a Gentle Oil

Just after shaving, you should apply a gentle oil to soothe any skin that has been irritated.

Shaving right is something you must do!
