In a recent article, “Does sex help with cramps?” We established that sex has a place in helping to relieve menstrual cramps. This left a lot of questions hanging. One of which is: Is there a healthy way to have period sex? The answer is yes—a big yes. There is really a healthy way to have sex on your period. And in this article, we will be showing you how to have period sex, especially when you are feeling bad cramps.
1. Be sure both of you are comfortable with it
For sex to be great sex, both you and your partner have to make it that. This means both your moods will affect the outcome of the sex. If one person’s mood is soiled, it can affect the outcome of the sex.
Talk to your partner about your desire to try period sex out.
In my experience, there is often some kind of resistance at first, especially with women. They consider it messy and not pleasurable. But if you can let your partner know that having sex during her period has its good sides, she may want to do it too.
The good side of period sex includes:
- Relief from Cramps: As we established in an article a while back, period sex can come a long way in helping with relieving cramps. Sex releases endorphins into the woman’s blood. Endorphins are a natural painkiller and can help with relieving just about any pain the woman may be feeling.
- Period sex can be more lubricating: women who are usually dry may find that period sex feels wetter. This can produce added feelings of pleasure.
- Natural contraceptive: period sex can be considered a natural contraceptive because a woman is usually the least fertile around the time of her monthly flow. Typically, the farther away from the monthly flow a woman is, the more she is likely to get pregnant. Pregnancy usually happens at around the 14 days of a woman’s cycle: this is the time she ovulates. Having sex so far away from her ovulation is a good idea.
When your partner becomes more open to the idea, you both can then try having sex.
2. Use a condom
It is always a great idea to use a condom when you have sex with your woman. This is because using a condom can help her feel a lot more relaxed, as she does not fear that her period blood is making a mess on your penis.
This is what a lot of women fear. A lot of men fear this, too. They don’t want that “mess” over them.
This can be fixed by putting on a condom. Be sure that you are putting the condom on the right way.
3. Choose the right spot
When it comes to period sex, the right spot truly matters. If you’re having sex in the right place, then you are likely to enjoy it.
Some of your best options are:
The Shower
Having sex in the shower with the lights off is such a good idea because it is more hygienic and less messy. Set the shower to a slow flow and have sex with your partner there. You will be limited to standing positions, or not, if you are able to maneuver the few sitting bathroom sex positions. This is a good thing.
A Bed
Another option you have is the bed. You will need a towel for this. One that you can easily wash afterward. It is better that you use a towel because a towel has some absorbent properties. It will keep the blood from making its way to the bed. Place the towel under your partner.
A Table
A table is a good idea too. This is because a table will have you both hanging in the air.
It is a good thing that you can have a towel under your partner to catch any dripping blood.
The Sofa
Having sex on the sofa is also a great idea. It can be very relaxing if you try out all the right positions, but make sure that you and your partner have a way to catch any dripping blood before it drips into the seats.
4. Remove the tampon
Before you even think about having period sex, remove the tampon. If left in there, tampons can cause sex-related injuries. There have been reported cases of tampons being pushed so deep into the vagina that bringing them out became an issue. Worse, not only the woman is at risk of being injured. The man also is at a big risk of being injured if he pushes his erect penis into a woman who has a tampon inside her.
Remove the tampon. Ideally, remove it up to thirty minutes before the sex happens so the trapped blood and clots find their way out before the sex happens.

5. Consider putting on a menstrual disc
A menstrual disc is such a good idea, too. A menstrual disc is a device that goes into a woman’s vagina and keeps blood from pouring out, making sex more appealing.
Menstrual discs are not so hard to find. In some countries, you can easily find them in a pharmacy. In other places, you can find it in big supermarkets. They’re amazing.
6. Use birth control
Birth control is always a good idea. This is because no birth control method, especially natural ones, is a hundred percent effective. There is always that small risk of a pregnancy.
Talk to your doctor about your options. If your partner cums inside you when you are not on birth control, you may have to take emergency contraceptive pills.
7. Wash up together
It is always a romantic idea to wash up together with your partner after sex.
After you both have had your moment, head over to the bathroom and wash up. Have your partner feel good. Enjoy your moment.
The best sex you might have may, ironically, be period sex.
