11 Best Oils to Use as Lube & Alternatives to Avoid

by | Ideas, Love

Feb 2, 2023

Thinking of the right oils to use as lube but have no idea which to choose? We wrote this article for you. Here is a list of oils that work pretty well as lubes and another list of ones to avoid.

Best Oils to Use as Lube

1. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is one of our most recommended oils as lube. We recommend it for two reasons: it is pretty gentle on your skin (that is, if you will not be using any protection.), and it also smells nice.

Coconut oil is also really cheap and can be found just about anywhere.

A few people agree to use coconut oil even when they use condoms. I will not recommend this, though, as coconut oil and any other oil might rip a condom.

2. Olive Oil

Just after coconut oil comes another amazing one: the extra virgin olive oil. Like coconut oil, this is quite gentle on the skin. I have never heard anyone complain about allergies from using extra virgin olive oil.

The oil is quite light. You will almost not be able to tell that it is there.

Even better, olive oil, being an extract from nutritious olive leaves, is loaded with omega-3 fatty acids and other oxidants.

Since the oil spreads around nicely, I advise that you do not use too much. Just a few drops can do the work really nicely.

3. Primrose Oil

Primrose oils have been used to induce labor. Trust me; they make an amazing lube. Like coconut oil and olive oil, it is pretty gentle, even though a bit thicker.

The thickness of this oil makes it a favored choice for both vaginal and anal sex.

If you are having anal sex, you may have to use some more drops. If it is vaginal sex, just one or two, or three drops is fine.

Primrose oil is not suitable for condoms at all. It is going to consistently wear the condom off until the condom just rips apart.

If you are going to have sex with condoms on, I suggest you stick to using water-based lubricants.

4. Avocado Oil

Avocado oil reminds me of extra virgin olive oil. I think it is because both are made from plants and have this gentleness to them.

Avocado oils barely have a taste. And it barely has a smell. So if you are one who does not like the flowery smell of olive and coconut oils in the bedroom whilst you get down with your lover, I recommend that you try avocado oils.

I will not recommend it, though, but you can use avocado oils with thick condoms.

5. Aloe Vera

Aloe vera has been used to relieve sunburns for quite a while. That is how gentle it is. It is not quite an oil, but I think it is right to add it to this list because of how amazing it is.

Unlike oils, it is considered a water-based lubricant, so it is very recommended for use with condoms.

There are a number of options out there, but I recommend you get a natural aloe vera-based lube from the grocery store. Make sure there are no added ingredients that can damage your skin or make you feel irritated.

6. Ghee

You will find a lot of Ghee down in South Asia. It looks something like butter and makes it to a lot of South Asian recipes.

The Asians believe it has healing properties. I agree with them. It is by far one of the best oil-based lubes I have used before.

It has good taste, too. So, you do not have to go wash your penis off before oral sex happens. You can get right to it even with the lube on!

You should wash Ghee off as soon as you have sex, though. Even though it does not quite work in the same way regular butter works, it is still butter, and so there is a risk of it going rancid.

7. Almond Oils

Oils from almonds smell amazing. They also taste amazing and are recommended for any kind of sex: even anal sex.

Because of how good it tastes, almond oils can be used even during oral sex. It does not spread around too much, so there wouldn’t be any annoying smudges on your bed.

8. Vitamin E Oil

Oils made with added vitamin E make very good lube because vitamin E is great for your skin. You can use these oils without the fear that your skin will become irritated or anything like that.

Vitamin E oils are pretty easy to find. All you need do is go to a grocery store and ask for one.

Oils to Avoid as Lube

Not all oils make it as good lube. Some are a no because they feel, taste, or even smell. These are the oils you should avoid as lube if you are trying to have that amazing sex.

1. Baby Oil

I like lubes to be natural. That is, no other added products should be found in them. Baby oil does not pass this requirement. Baby oils contain a lot of petroleum jelly and mineral oil.

There is an increased risk that you will get a vaginal infection if you use baby oil during vaginal sex.

2. Essential Oils

Even though everyone seems to be giving essential oils a pass, I do not recommend it for the same reasons I do not recommend baby oil. If you think you have to use essential oils, use so little it even makes a difference.

3. Petroleum Jelly

Petroleum jelly and vaselines are a no. You should not use them, as they are too heavy to even make the sex feel good. Sex with petroleum jelly feels rather: ‘greasy.’

Even worse, petroleum jelly contains some compounds that are not great for you.

Your choice of oil-based lube should be one that does not leave you feeling irritated after the sex.
